All Quiet On the Western Front is a war story about a young man serving in the First World War. about the time he spent there and what happened around him. The author's aim in writing this book is to inform readers about the difficulties and miseries of the First World War. It attempts to inform readers of what life was like for men serving as soldiers in the war during this time period. Erich Note, the author, gives many details and stories to describe the suffering and miseries of the path. He does a great job of getting his message across and enlightening readers. The historical context of this book is World War I in Germany. Many people describe the book as "the greatest war novel of all time", which is why it did a great job depicting war. The book begins by telling the story of how they all went to school together. It introduces all the characters and describes what they all look like. The characters in this book learn to deal with cold nights and growling stomachs. Some soldiers would sneak out and collect hay to cover themselves during the night. (Page 40) At this time in their lives, they did not hesitate to ask a dying person for their belongings, if they could be of use to them. Kat's friend Kemmerich had his leg amputated and later died, but at one point when Kat and Kropp went to visit him, another man, Muller asked for his boots. Kemmerich didn't know his leg was amputated or that he was dying, so he didn't want to abandon them. Just before he died, he told Kat to take the boots and give them to Muller (page 28). He was injured five times and the last one was severe. This book made him famous and rich at the age of 33. He knew how to describe war, so readers could imagine the horrors he saw. He didn't give a lot of detail about some of the things he wrote, because I'm sure it was difficult for him to talk about. This book was his most famous writing and still is today. This book changed his life greatly and he moved to America just before he died in 1970.
