Essay / Age of illiteracy or age of literacy - 713
Technology has sparked debates about whether we are in the age of illiteracy or the age of literacy. The reason why some researchers believe that the younger generation writes much more than any generation before them is due to the amount of socializing that takes place online, while others who believe that this generation has produced more of illiterate people, indicates that social networks are the cause. They think that social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. are attributed to sloppy writing and careless reading. The use of abbreviations or short slangs like lol, brb has become the other fashion. The use of technology has caused more people to obtain information from blogs, which has been criticized by many journalists who doubt the accuracy of the information; and also, in the computer age, the use of printed dictionaries is rapidly falling into oblivion, as every word needed is found online. The words are very specific with their examples and one does not need an editor to know what a word means as one can easily look them up online. Students also learned to understand that they are writing to the public and therefore need to be more creative, more persuasive, and more organized in their writing in order to get their message across to the public. It is believed that the previous generation rarely published their own paragraph and so most students needed an interview before they could write something. But through continued writing in class, at school, and online, students have become writing experts. Many scientists have argued that reading online does not help people. Their research found that people simply scanned through each page they read, selecting individual words and p...... middle of paper ...... text messages, Twitter updates, chats on Facebook have also negatively affected some students. . Most university professors complain about the way students use their text messages, tweets or Facebook chats to write an essay for them, which they consider shocking and unacceptable. This could also be of interest to most topics where blog writers might be biased in their information. Take Fox News and MSNBC for example, anyone wanting accurate information may not trust either news network because they are sometimes biased and aim to promote the different agendas of the groups they support , either conservatives for Fox News or liberals for MSNBC. it would be fair to say that technology has both positive and negative impacts. But it is okay to say that it has had a more positive impact on our society today and therefore people overlook the negative sides of it..
