  • Essay / Slum Dwellers Essay - 1529

According to Cronin and Guthrie (2011), the government controls slum upgrading programs and policy reform on informal settlements to ensure that benefits reach all vulnerable people in the slums. For example, in Kenya, the government has allocated funds for slum upgrading as part of the national budget. Additionally, UN-Habitat, in collaboration with developing governments, has spent US$11.05 billion to improve sustainable urban living conditions. Under this fund, the government built houses in slums for those most in need of shelter. Governments are working with the community to identify vulnerable people who will be able to move into homes and pay rent of around $40 per person.
