Essay / Flight: The Journey to the Moral Life - 1191
By taking this course, I learned that the moral life can be divided into two main areas, which are who we are as people and our actions. In class, we watched the movie “Flight” with Denzel Washington to show us the true complexity of humans and their behavior as they attempt to live moral lives. The film follows the life of the main character, William "Whip" Whitaker, through many life-changing decisions and we watch him try to learn and understand how to deal with the consequences of these decisions. Throughout the film, Whip is constantly trying to figure out who he is as a person, which I believe is why he has made so many bad decisions in his life. At first he seems like a typical alcoholic and drug addict, but as the film unfolded, so did his character. In my opinion, he is an extremely complicated and complex character, which is why it is so difficult to understand his actions in the film. Whip was heavily influenced by his past, which is why he let his alcohol and drug problem take over his life. He was influenced not only by his past, but also by the people around him. Overall, I think Whip's confusion about who he is as a person is expressed in his actions, but ultimately he proves that he is more complex than the sum of his behavior and reorients his life. In my opinion, I believe Whip Whitaker is a good person, but it took him a while to realize his true potential in life. Some examples of scenes in the film that show him to be a good person are when he lands the plane, when he finally tells the truth in court about his alcoholism, and when he shares his story with his fellow inmates. In the first scene, Whip calmly dealt with the crew and moved...... middle of paper...... less judgment towards others because I don't know their personal situation. In the film, Whitaker has serious drug and alcohol problems, which trace back to his dissatisfaction with the past and his current life. Additionally, this film showed me that it is okay to make mistakes, but to use them as a learning experience. In today's society, mistakes have a very negative connotation, which is not always the case. Yes, Whitaker's mistakes were very serious and life-changing, but he would not have learned or been able to redirect his life without those mistakes. Additionally, he could not have shared his stories with others in order to prevent them from making similar mistakes in their lives. Overall, this insight will allow me to change my behavior and actions in order to live a more moral life and begin my journey to becoming a better person..
