Essay / Poem by Robinson Jeffers - 1185
Robinson Jeffers was a leading American poet of the modern era who changed the format of poetry with his prophetic and enlightening writings, including "Hurt Hawks" and "Oh Lovely Rock ". » is Robinson Jeffers' most notable poem. It is a poem in two stanzas with the feelings of two different characters. This poem is almost as the title describes it. A hawk with a badly injured wing that will never fly again just wants to be put out of its misery. He doesn't want to wait until he starves. This is how he would die since he can no longer hunt. The falcon is sitting under a tree waiting for its death. Then, when the hawk sleeps that night, he dreams of flying. Thanks to this dream, he wakes up with new energy. As the falcon sits there, it is ready to defend itself against anything with its sharp claws. Being injured is very hard for him because he has been on top of the world. Yet he remains convinced that nothing can confront him except death itself. He is an arrogant hawk and will not ask for mercy from the “Wild God of the World.” At this point, Jeffers adds another point of view to the poem. A man finds the hawk, but he would rather kill another man than such a beautiful creature. Instead, he cares for the hawk for six weeks, trying to nurse it back to health. It allows the hawk to roam freely, but the hawk always returns to the man and still cannot fly. For the man, it seems that the bird is coming back because he is almost asking for death since his life will never be the same again. So finally, the man shoots the hawk to put it out of its misery. As the man watched the falcon fall, he thought it was peaceful and calm, now that he had gotten what he wanted. Rather than being the intense animal he was... middle of paper ...... principles on which he bases his approach to poetry in a few simple quotes; “The function of poetry is the passionate presentation of beauty and it should be an intensification of life, not a refuge from it” (Writings of Hunt RJ). Jeffers believed his poetry should be about permanent things and avoid sentiment. While other poets of the time tried to transform the real world with their imagination. Jeffers liked to comment on the ordinary aspects of life so that everyone could discover more instead of creating an alternative to the ordinary as modern poets tried to do (the writings of Hunt RJ). He also tried to show the natural beauty of the world in his poems. The fact that Jeffers is so authentic in his time and even today - due to the fact that he disagreed with the way technology places us in an almost fake environment - is the main reason why his work continues to speak to readers.
