Essay / The Crime of Crime Among Infidels by Ayaan Hirsi Ali
Many people believe that publicly humiliating people will reduce the number of crimes. According to Tangney, “humiliated individuals are no less likely to repeat their transgression” (Tangney 525). This shows that when a crime is committed, big or small, saying it publicly will lead to more crimes because wherever the person goes, people see them as a bad person and not as someone who made a mistake. Often this will cause the person to commit a worse crime than the one they have already committed because they view themselves as bad people due to society's view of them. Often they will be unable to accept the fact that they have made a mistake. Because the government usually gets involved by giving them a punishment that only makes them feel worse about themselves. Which will lead them to deny their criminal act. Because the shameful punishment the government inflicts on them will make them become “irrationally angry tourniquets” (Tangney 525). Therefore, it is better to give criminals punishments that will make them behave better than to shame them in front of everyone.
