  • Essay / Analysis of Tom Sawyer - 1502

The censorship board should review this story and remove the racist ideologies from the book. If the committee can change the construct of prejudice against people of color, the book would be tolerable for young students. Without the prejudiced remarks and negative influences of the people of color involved throughout the dialogue, this book would be suitable for a wider audience. The author's unwelcome portrayal of people of color is a disgrace to African American and Native American culture. Young minds would be safe from the racist language used, and they would be safe from the violent opinions of people used by Mark Twain. The American Library Association should be responsible for authorizing the removal of racist ideology from the story of Tom Sawyer. They promote the freedom of expression of ideas in a book. This is important work to do. If careful work is not done, it would harm the public. The American Library Association cites John Mills' work on On Liberty, which states that "mankind would no more be justified in silencing this person than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing the 'humanity' (John Mill 1859). It is difficult to challenge the viewpoints of books and it takes dedication to do so. The reading public wanting to know more about Tom Sawyer will express a desire not to ban the book. The American Library Association will need to decide the best path to meet the needs of readers while ensuring the safety of young minds. The Story of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is an amazing book to read, but the book cannot be reached by a wider audience because it is imperative to ban it to young people.
