Essay / Emotional Intelligence Essay - 693
The amount of useful concepts acquired through learning emotional intelligence (EQ) will have a profound impact on personal and professional life. The goal of EQ is to have the ability to express, understand, and manage our emotions as well as having the ability to understand, interpret, and respond to the emotions of others (Bradberry & Greaves, 2009). As part of the final assignment, I will discuss what I learned, the results of the online EQ assessment, and a strategy that will improve my EQ. Based on the multiple concepts acquired, an important lesson learned is what true social consciousness actually means. I always thought my people-watching skills were pretty good, as well as pretty good accuracy at reading people and knowing the mood of the room. However, after reading EQ 2.0, I learned that true social awareness is about more than observing individuals. Social awareness is about respecting, valuing, and truly knowing others who may not share the same values or beliefs as me. I learned to change my focus from internal to external. In doing so, I will be able to identify, understand, and respond to the emotions and behavior of individuals, which is the goal of social awareness (Bradberry & Greaves, 2009). Developing my social awareness will not succeed until I have strong self-awareness. I must first be able to recognize and understand my emotions in order to see others clearly. The impact EQ will have on my career path is essential to my success. I understand that in order to learn to be present in the moment and achieve active listening, I need to develop a stronger EQ. Being able to connect and understand with people on a deeper level as well as see the world through their people...... middle of paper...... emotions to get them across. This strategy will help minimize emotionally charged responses due to emotional triggers that occur in our daily lives (Bradberry & Greaves, 2009). The benefits of this strategy are personal and spiritual growth as well as happiness and a successful career. In conclusion, I learned that social awareness is about understanding and identifying the emotions of others. It's not about "me", but about those around me. Self-awareness cannot truly be developed if my self-awareness is not fully developed. The challenge I focus on is my self-confidence. Using the strategic choice Lean in Your Discomfort, facing my feelings and emotions instead of avoiding them will also contribute to the development of my self-confidence. Ultimately, the benefits of having strong EQ will help build trust and maintain strong relationships..
