The Principles of the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium, or INTASC, were developed in 1987 to provide beginning teachers with a guideline on way they should function. In total, there are ten INTASC principles: subject knowledge, human development and learning, diversity in learning, variety of teaching strategies, motivation and management, communication skills, instructional planning skills, assessment, reflection and accountability, and relationships and partnerships. These ten principles align with the National Council for Career Education standards. This ensures that beginning teachers are aware of what is expected of them. The INTASC principles provide teachers with a tool they can use to succeed in their profession as well as an awareness of the skills and characteristics they must possess.
