Essay / Why schools shouldn't have dress codes. - 888
Rheanne Sargent was suspended from her studies last October for dying her hair pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and she's not the only one. Across the country, students are sent home or punished because their hair color is not “natural” or their clothing is “unprofessional.” This is an unfair and unfair punishment to students who are simply trying to express themselves through their clothes or hair. Schools should only be able to impose a formal dress code if it is proven to be distracting or harmful. Additionally, students should be given the opportunity to change their style or appearance. However, in some schools and districts you are sent home. or suspended if you dye your hair an “unnatural” color. Students need a way to express themselves in multiple ways. One of these ways is their appearance or style. There are only a few schools that limit this capacity, but it's a bit too much. For example, a young girl in South Carolina was suspended for dying her hair partially red. It was harsh treatment for this girl who was trying something new or just liked the color red enough to make her hair that color. Similarly, one school banned “unnatural” red or blue hair, even though it was not district policy. This demonstrates that schools are abusing their power to impose a law against “abnormally” dyed hair. People, not just students, should be allowed to change themselves however they want. Schools neglect this right. For this reason, we should limit what schools can prohibit or restrict. Just as importantly, students and teachers are protected by the First Amendment whether or not they are in school. It is written in the Constitution that people have the f...... middle of paper ......tif. Students have the right to change their style and express themselves. However, schools may place restrictions on clothing that is distracting or explicit. If schools continue to enforce unnecessary dress codes, students will continue to be treated unfairly for speaking out. Children should be allowed to show what they support and who they are in any way possible. This can help them later in life, when they can support a cause or vote for what they think is right. This creativity will help them throughout their lives, helping them to have new ideas or create new inventions later. We should support them while they are young, because you never know who will be the next Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. We can set them on the path to greatness and creativity when they are young, by letting them express themselves..
