    First of all, nursing courses require many critical and strategic thinking skills. These courses aim to teach us how to care for patients with specific illnesses and keep them safe while we care for them. I am referring to the legal, ethical, and safety practices that we are taught throughout nursing school. I was fortunate to witness quality security practices throughout my internships, but that doesn't mean the risk of breach wasn't present. The most recent example I can think of involves safety practices with restrained patients. I have noticed that the use of restraint is an option that can cause great distress in cases of abuse, but is quite often necessary in a unit like the one I am currently in, which is the care unit medical intensive care units. Although this is concerning, many patients who required restraints were constantly removing tubes such as Foley catheters, nasogastric tubes, and IV drips. At this point in my training, I have not been on a rotation where an incident report was filed, but I have learned that on units such as Med-Surgi, common incident reports filed are for falls of patients.
