Across the world, millions of people need help from others. They need people to help them get money, food, time or care. This need could be on a smaller scale, even with something as simple as the need for someone nice. When people help someone in the community, regardless of their size or whether or not they are part of a group, it is community service. Community service is not just about the large organizations that run operations, but rather about volunteers and those who need help. Community service will help both the intended recipient and those who volunteer, as giving time, effort, or material goods to others has been proven to contribute to happiness. This free service carried out by ordinary people helps non-profit organizations by allowing the money earned to go to those who need it rather than those who run the project. We have also seen the morale of entire communities increase through intensive local community service. Connection to Happiness According to The Art of Happiness by Howard C. Cutler, when people see people worse off than themselves, they become more satisfied in life (23). This was true on many levels of life, from those already at the bottom seeing someone even lower or someone higher noticing someone else higher but not as progressed. Action for Happiness also claims that studies have shown that giving to others increases happiness more than receiving a gift from others, regardless of the size of the gift.
