Essay / The Value of Bar Mitzvah - 2051
This is a part of the Torah that I believe represents my values as a whole. This part is part of Parsha Ha-Shavuah which focuses on the story of Sarah (Abraham's wife) having a baby at a very old age, and the details relating to it. In the part I'm reading, the emphasis is that you generally need to be hospitable to others and that families don't always follow "traditional" patterns. Now, let me explain my values and how they fit into this parsha: Humor - Humor is important to me because it helps me maintain a fresh and clear outlook on life and it usually brightens my day. someone - or mine - in general. There is also that old stereotype that "Jews have so many reasons to joke that they can't stop." So why not keep making jokes about everything? It certainly helped us overcome some of the difficulties our ancestors faced, and in my experience, humor can make any situation better. Family - For me, family is the same as community; another value that plays at least a small role in my life. Community is family and family is community. I think of the Duke Lemur Center as a community of people who all like to do the same thing, but at the same time I also like to think of it as a family. There is also the more traditional sense of family that we all know. Moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and other extended family members. Loyalty – I chose loyalty for several reasons, but the first thing I thought when I saw this was: wouldn't it be ironic to choose "Loyalty" as a value, but still not remain loyal to your values and your choice of values? The whole thing about loyalty - to people and things - is keeping the belief or faith you had in that thing or person and sticking to it middle of paper......ence, and in editorial work my Dad helped me do that (and almost everything I write today), because I need it! I'd also like to thank my uncle for his hard work running the whole thing and for being a generally awesome uncle. Finally, I would like to fully thank Ira for all the hard work he has put into helping me make this happen. the whole process is manageable. Setting up the meetings, giving me advice and nudges in the right direction, and being the person I can ask questions and get a straight answer. So, Ira, thank you very much! Obviously, I am very grateful and hope that we can continue to know each other even when this is done. What this experience meant to me/did for me...why it was worth all the effort I put into it.
