Essay / Essay on Overfishing - 651
Overfishing has become a major problem in recent years. Many fish species are disappearing due to this problem, as well as entire ecosystems. Not only are we losing many species of fish, but we are also losing a beneficial food source. Pesi-vegetarians are actors who need this food source. Fishermen are another major player in this problem. Fishermen could lose their jobs due to the fact that there will not be enough fish to catch in our waters. And another stakeholder that is very largely affected by overfishing is fishing. The problem of overfishing can be solved by limiting the amount of fish that can be caught. People who catch these endangered fish will have their jobs saved. This will also produce more fish for people whose main food source in their diet is fish. The definition of overfishing is fishing so intensely that you deplete the supply of edible fish. The amount of fish suitable for human consumption in our waters is decreasing due to the global problem of overfishing. According to a study by an international team of scientists, by 2048, almost all edible fish in the ocean will be gone (“Go Fish”). This dilemma will affect pesi-vegetarians, fishermen and fisheries with their food sources, jobs and industries. First, overfishing will have an effect on pesi-vegetarians who only eat fish and no other meat, because they will lose their main source of food. protein. Each person in America eats about 16.6 pounds of fish per year; so overfishing not only affects pesi-vegetarians, but it affects all Americans (Schmid). “…hundreds of millions of people depend on fish for their livelihood…” (Turan) is a quote from the article “Forget pirates; fe...... middle of paper ......g form of overfishing used today. It is the action of dragging large nets across the ocean floor in an attempt to catch fish. This act disturbs the ocean floor and disturbs other sea creatures. Dr. Les Watling, professor of zoology at the University of Hawaii, said "bottom trawling is the most destructive action humans take in the ocean." (Dr Watling) Keeping tight control over the amount of fish that can be caught will help save many species. Although some fishermen may lose part of their income, this will make fish easier to catch and more abundant in the future. If this solution is used, the fishing industry will increase as fish become more abundant. The simple solution to this big problem is to limit the amount of fishing that can be done..
