In many totalitarian societies, children are removed from their homes and placed in neighborhoods run by the military or government. In these societies, children are taken from their parents because they are easily influenced and can be influenced in the “wrong way.” For this reason, children are removed from their homes and taken to government-controlled centers. Leaders want to give children the perspective that suits them. Parents are seen as untrustworthy by leaders because of their beliefs. In Anthem, people are not allowed to know their parents; for all we know, the saint at the stake (a man executed for uttering the forbidden word "I") could be the father of Equality. The children in this book go to the school hostel where they learn, because they cannot think as freely as we do today. By learning what society believes, they automatically conform to how the world wants them to be. In Anthem, people's choices are imposed on them.
