Essay / Increasing the Effectiveness of FRLM Behaviors
The situation at the XYZ Air Base Wing Security Office is gravely desperate; the security team has atrophied and is now an ineffective group of four personnel incapable of adopting the "safety first" culture for the wing. Furthermore, the group is incapable of collectively attacking and resolving a security crisis such as the one we currently face. Four lives within the wing were lost due to the lack of a “safety first” culture. I am the new Wing Safety Officer that Colonel (Col) Ellen Parker has tasked with correcting the ongoing trend of poor road safety that has resulted in 15 recent road accidents (including the four lost lives). In this article, I will analyze the leadership of the former Wing Safety Officer – Captain (Capt) Carl Matthews – and related effects using the Full Range Leadership Model (FRLM) as a framework. Next, I will use the concepts of FRLM and teambuilding to organize a leadership coup to build a team ready to address the traffic accident trend and improve wing safety. The Wing Safety Office has failed to address the highway safety crisis and function as a team focused on a common goal. objective due to the absence of effective leadership. Capt Matthews' predominant “laisser-faire” leadership behavior prevented him from getting to know his team and leveraging their background and skills. For example, he chose to ignore or dilute the team's contributions to building an effective safety campaign. Through this action, he managed to alienate his supporters. For example, Mr. Clark DeBurgh – considered the Wing's safety “know-how” – offered many suggestions on how to solve the traffic safety problem. Capt Matthews dismissed the suggestions as “old ideas” despite the success of the road safety campaign. M...... middle of paper ...... tthews chose inappropriate leadership behavior that crippled – if not prevented – any chance of creating a solution to the road safety problem. His LF approach (and his timid attempt at CR) inoculated the team's effectiveness and gave birth to a group of four individuals removed from their office functions. It is clear that Capt Matthews needed to use a combination of transformational leadership and team building behaviors to transform the Wing Security Office into a team committed to security and ready to take on any security challenge. security.
