  • Essay / Analysis of the film: Gangs of New York - 1600

Gangs of New YorkThe film Gangs of New York takes place in the Five Points district of Lower Manhattan. It begins in 1846. The main protagonist Amsterdam Fallon, the son of Priest Fallon, watches his father, the leader of the Dead Rabbit gang, prepare and die in battle. While his father is in the latter part of his life and giving advice to his son, Billy "the Butcher" Cutting breaks Priest Fallon's head. Amsterdam flees Cutting's henchmen to hide his father's knife before it is captured by the Natives gang. He is taken to the Hellgate orphanage. In 1862, Amsterdam returned to the Five Point neighborhood and reunited with his old friend Johnny Sirocco. Johnny now works for Billy "the Butcher" and introduces Amsterdam to Cutting. Amsterdam makes his way into Cutting's inner circle of natives. Amsterdam also meets Jenny Everdeane while spending time with Johnny. She meets Johnny to steal his watch. Amsterdam notices this and lets Johnny know. Johnny claims he always lets her take things. As Cutting and Jenny take a liking to Amsterdam, Johnny becomes jealous. He notices that young Vallon is quickly making his way into the high ranks of Cutting's gang and into Jenny's heart. Out of jealousy, Johnny reveals Amsterdam's true identity to Cutting. Cutting decides to make Vallon angry. He succeeds by playing a dangerous game involving knives with Jenny during the annual celebration of the deaths of the Vallon priests. Amsterdam then attempts to assassinate Cutting but fails and is taught a lesson by Cutting. Amsterdam lives with Jenny's help. To avenge his father, he revives the banned Dead Rabbit gang. He offers Cutting a challenge after his friend "Monk" McGinn is killed by Cutting. The fight takes place in the Five Points neighborhood on the day when aspects of this period have been described in a manner close to its historical period. Works Cited Gallman, J.
