In the first chapter of Emerging Workplace Conflict Management Systems: Lessons from Corporate America for Managers and Dispute Resolution Professionals, authors David Lipsky , Ronald Seeber and Richard Fincher (2003) lay the foundation for the rest of the book. They provide historical context on why companies moved from dispute resolution to conflict management and highlight the fact that "substantial dissatisfaction" must lead companies to change the way they handle dispute resolution (Lipsky , Seeber and Fincher, 2003, chapter 1, Inclination to Change). Additionally, the authors articulated the differences between dispute management and conflict management (Chapter 1, Litigation, Litigation and Conflict Management), detailed the five characteristics of an integrated conflict management system, listed the eight elements essential elements of a fair conflict management system, and highlighted other characteristics that effective conflict management systems share (Chapter 1, The Concept of a Conflict Management System). Meanwhile, in chapter two, Lipsky et al. (2003) argue that the rise of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in the United States must be understood as “a phenomenon that is part of a new, emerging social contract” (para 11). They then detailed the forces of change that have apparently led to a “reorganization of how work is done in corporate America” (Chapter 2, Forces of Change). Then they closed the chapter by summarizing how the recognition of power imbalances between government and citizens, as well as between employers and employees, led to "the development of new strategies and techniques for managing and resolving conflicts" ( Chapter 2, Conclusion, paragraph 5). So the reading is in line with the p...... middle of the article ......conflict resolution students, she would strive to cover the same information in a clearer manner; using a more graphically appealing layout, keywords, sidebars and interesting quotes to keep readers engaged. These questions, however, are simply personal preferences and should not take anything away from the text. Emerging Systems for Management Workplace Conflict is a valuable resource for students of conflict resolution. Works Cited Amerland, D. (April 8, 2014).
