  • Essay / Diversity and inequality in the United States - 875

Our book opens us to the world of diversity and inequality in the United States. It emphasizes questions regarding groups that hold superiority over inferior groups for multiple reasons. In “Imagine Our Country,” our book openly denounces America's problems and how, in some cases, we only increase the chances that they will persist. This helps define the differences between racism and discrimination, which I never thought enough to distinguish before taking this course. These chapters also offer hope and ways to combat these differences, because even though we are stuck in a social vacuum, there are ways to challenge them and make society aware of the changes and act accordingly! There are two groups of people, those who belong to the dominant group and those who belong to the subordinate group. The placement of this group can be temporary or permanent depending on the social context. Temporary inequality mainly takes into consideration status or power, defined as the relationship of domination with age or occupation. The superior in this case has the quality to transmit to the lesser. The lower party, however, retains equal value to the higher party and equality develops between the two parties. Whereas permanent inequality is ALL about status and power. In this group, there is a marked difference between the value of the dominant group and that of the subordinate groups. Dominant groups play their role by influencing and promoting negative associations with their subordinates. Dominators label their subordinates as ineffective or incompetent in order to justify denying opportunities to everyone. In some cases, subordinates will respond with internalized oppression. In a system like this, subordinates often develop skills and adapt to the habits of dominant groups, often learning more about the dominant class than vice versa. Even though many experts in the field of “subordinate groups” come from dominant groups. “Imagine a Country” was extremely eye-opening for me. He blatantly denounces discrimination and prejudice directed against various groups. A big predecessor and topic I'm going to focus on is salaries. Stating that the United States requires people to work for a living while denying them minimum wage. This highlighted an important fact about how families typically rely on paying for health care OR child care. I was a teaching assistant and this reading really shed light on how women are treated in the workforce..
