  • Essay / Muhhamad and Islamic Salat - 1793

After receiving the first sacred revelation in the year 610, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) embarked on a divine mission to preach his message. These revelations took place over a period of 22 years. During these 22 years, Islam began to unfold and develop according to events and circumstances. Events such as the Year of Sorrow, Ascension Night, Hijra 622 and the construction of the first mosque at Quba all played a role in the development of the Islamic religion and added to its complexity . One of these complexities is the gradual introduction of the five pillars of Islam, which constitute the cornerstone of the Islamic religion. One of the main pillars is Salat (Muslim prayer). Salat is one of the pillars that requires an outward demonstration of faith and submission to God. The current form of salat, which consists of five daily prayers, took shape in AD 619, approximately 9 years after the first revelation, and its details were refined in AD 622. Their doubts could be seen when some of the “Muslims” of Yathrib could not accept the change of qibla and claimed that the Prophet Muhammad had resolutely decided to change the qibla. So the verse above shows a response from God to the hypocrites saying that it was His decision and that He is aware of what they are doing. In conclusion, salat has constantly developed since the beginning of the revelations and until the Medinan period. We see how Islam began with only two obligatory prayers, a daytime prayer and a long nighttime prayer, before evolving to include five daily prayers. We also see how ablution, adhan and qibla were all issues that were determined as Islam began to establish itself as a major religion in the region..
