Jurgis, Ona and their family moved to the United States to have a better life. They want to live freely and succeed in giving their children a better life than theirs. They had so much faith in America, but soon after arriving in Chicago, things started to go wrong. Jurgis is blind to the reality of corruption in Packingtown. Sinclair said it best when he said: “From top to bottom the place was simply a seething cauldron of jealousies and hatreds; there was no loyalty or decency in it, there was no place where a man counted for anything to a dollar” (Sinclair, 50). All the bosses in Packingtown were in a corrupt alliance to trample anyone and everyone to stay on top, because all they cared about was money. They did not care about their workers, forcing everyone who worked in Packingtown to become wage slaves. All workers were also replaceable.
