  • Essay / College Athletes: The Transition to the Professional Sports League

College athletes have a goal they are pursuing. Moving to professional sports leagues is an accomplishment that most college athletes wanted to achieve. But most college athletes go to college, forgo finishing their senior year, and don't graduate. In basketball, most athletes become one and that's it. This means they go to college for just one year and then enter the NBA draft. For the NFL, players must be three years out of high school and do not necessarily have to go to college. Some argue that athletes who are good enough should enter the professional draft due to financial concerns. Others argue that athletes who stay in college risk injury before reaching the professional level. College athletes should stay in college for four years before turning professional, because by then they will have developed the essential elements to enter the draft. Choosing to stay in college to earn a degree will help athletes be better prepared in their professional sports careers, establish careers after their professional careers, transition to adulthood, and produce educated individuals. (or mature individuals with more knowledge) Too many college athletes have the opportunity to enter a professional draft that does not require the athlete to complete all four years of college and earn a degree. This is a problem because athletes do not have the college experience that would prepare them for real-world situations throughout their athletic careers. In college, they will learn skills and have more time to be better prepared. Without staying in college for four, athletes won't see that there are other options for them besides sports. It will be difficult for them to see if they have interests other than sports. Also remaining... middle of paper ...... the chapter is about the NBA's changing rules around the league.
