  • Essay / Snowboarding: the past, the present and the beyond

Cascading down a frozen mountain, crystallized flakes of icy water adorn my face with their presence; free fall sixty feet, only to be saved by a cushion of snow: that's why I snowboard. The sheer adrenaline rush generated by the sport transformed what began as a backyard hobby into an Olympic event. Although you may think of snowboarding as just a board strapped to your feet; its engineering and history have a much richer history. In 1965, Sherman Poppen laid the foundations for snowboarding. “On Christmas morning, Sherman Poppen walked into his garage, crossed two Kmart skis together, stood at the top of his backyard hill, and started snow surfing (MacArthur)” That was it, the be. People flocked around Poppen as he casually paraded around the local toboggan run. The demand for this craft became apparent to Sherman and he quickly began working on producing more under the Snurfer name. (MacArthur 1). Poppen began scouring the city for his precious supplies and crafted dozens of Snurfers. This attracted local media attention, leading to the licensing and production of the Snurfer. Snurfer was a good start, but never really gained traction as anything more than a hobby on small hills. It wasn't until Dimitrije Milovich came on the scene that people started to see the potential in snowboarding. “Milovich was introduced to snowboarding in 1970 by Wayne Stoveken. Two years later, he dropped out of Cornell University, moved to Utah, and began testing his prototype cards. (MacArthur 1). This was Milovitch's only desire. In the year 1974, Dimitrije started making boards in his garage with a few of his close friends. In 1976, he founded the Winterstick company. Under this name Dimitrije ...... middle of paper ......port. The following year, more ski resorts opened their slopes to snowboarders than ever before. Snowboards can now be seen on almost any slope that is suitable for skiers. www.usatoday.com/money/companies/management/2010-02-08-burton08_ST_N.htmhttp://www.winterstick.com/info.php?info=historyhttp://www.lib-tech.com/snowboard- technology/http://www.shaunwhite.com/bio/about/http://www.olympic.org/sportshttp://www.ttrworldtour.com/ranking/rider-report/rider/piiroinen-peetu.htmlhttp: //demandware.edgesuite.net/aadf_prd/on/demandware.static/Sites-Burton_US-Site/Sites-Burton_US-Library/default/v1314821415999/pdfs/BackintheDay.pdfhttp://www.thehistoryof.net/history-of- snowboard.html
