  • Essay / The Mind as a Function of the Body by Richard Taylor

Science cannot explain everything, but it strives to seek answers and relies on evidence. The religion is based solely on faith and believes in many things that make no sense and have no evidence to support its ideas. Part of this is the belief that there is a substance beyond the element that does not take up space, but is nevertheless related to the body. The belief that the spirit or soul is not related to the body and that they are both two separate substances. The body is one and the mind is another. This belief is not logical and makes no sense now that without the brain, which is a substance that constitutes the body, a person would not be able to function in the world. The mind and the brain are one, and these two cannot be separated now that the brain is just another part of the body. Richard Taylor explained why the body and mind are one and why they are not two separate substances. In the article “The Mind as a Function of the Body,” Taylor divides his article into several sections and clearly explains why dualism, or the theory that the mind and body are separate, is not conceivable. In one of these sections, the origins of why some philosophers and people believe in dualistic metaphysics are explained in detail. As Taylor stated, "When we form an idea of a physical body or object, what most likely comes to mind is not a person or an animal but something much more simple, like a stone or a marble” (133). Humans tend to believe that a physical object is simple and contains nothing complex. A problem with this belief is that unlike a stone or marble, a human (or animal) has a brain and the body is made up of living cells (excluding dead skin cells, hair and nails which are dead cells). The f...... middle of paper...... what Richard Taylor could have already done. Nagel, at no point in his essay, made any strong arguments about the separation of the mind and the brain, but his arguments were intended to refute Taylor's final point. Nagel's statement that Martians are capable of learning more about our brains than we do allows us to conclude that at no time is it necessary to believe that there is a soul or spirit separate from the body. What this proves is that science is always trying to improve and cannot currently explain private psychological states or experiences, but that the mind is the brain and the brain is the body.
