Free Essay on The Catcher in the RyeThe Catcher in the Rye is a work of fiction and tragic comedy. I chose him because I heard he was a boy about my age. In this book, the main character, Holden Caulfield, tells us what happened during his Christmas vacation. Holden is a sixteen-year-old boy who failed out of a private prep school. Because he is afraid that his parents will find out this fact, he goes to a hotel in New York instead of returning home after leaving school for Christmas vacation. In New York, many things happen to him in a few days. For example, he goes to the hotel bar and meets three women after arriving there. The women leave shortly after he doesn't speak to them, and Holden feels alone and depressed. He goes to another bar to find someone to spend time with, but he finds no one to talk to and returns to the hotel more depressed. At the hotel he meets a prostitute, but he sends her away without having sex because he feels depressed and sorry for her. He was even more disappointed when she tried to steal his money, even though he was trying to be nice to her. The next morning, he meets an old friend and asks her to flee this corrupt world and live in the woods with him. However, she tells him he's crazy and then leaves him. Holden meets other people later, but they also fail to resolve his problems, and he feels increasingly depressed and alone. He finally decides to run away and live like a deaf and mute who will not need to communicate with anyone. Before leaving, he will say goodbye to his little sister, Pheobe, whom he admires the most. While talking and playing with her, Holden changes his mind and decides to join her family and because he realizes that there are many things he cannot solve on his own. The theme of this novel is how innocence is corrupted by society. Holden thinks everyone who grew up is wrong because their behavior and advice is all wrong. The title of
