  • Essay / Audre Lorde - 1734

Audre LordeIn our class discussions and readings, I learned that women were once responsible for the human race, that women were part of a community, that no race was lower or higher, that peace and harmony reigned. in the world until the arrival of the patriarchal era, planning to take root in the ground for a long time. Women have been raped of their identity, their race and their status in society. Men dominated the biblical stories, leaving Mary aside. Thus, the war began between the races, women fought to find their identity and to do so, they began by writing. One of these women was Audre Lorde. Audre Lorde grew up in a very sheltered family. She was protected by her mother who believed that white people should not be trusted. Considering her mother an idol, she did not dare to question her authority and obeyed her as she said. The crux was when Lorde was alone at college, that's when she fought racism and prejudice with writing and her involvement in the women's community. Zami: A New Spelling of My Name by Audre Lorde, tells the story of Lorde's childhood in Harlem. on her own, her discovery and acceptance of her dark skin color, her status as a lesbian, and, most importantly, her status as a woman in the 1950s. As with her other works, Zami: A New Spelling of My Name by Audre was artistically produced and could be read as a poetic song. Audre presents her audience with her early experiences of prejudice and self-discovery in order to situate her position and status in her world. Growing up, Lorde couldn't describe what it meant to be different; she had no words to express the indifference she felt towards the world. Lorde's parents, especially her mother, chose to ignore racism and protected their children from the shadow of racism in...... middle of paper ...... refused to give women the right to own their name and identity. The result therefore hurt and outraged the women who decided to unify all women through writing. Audre Lorde was one of these women. She not only helped bring about women's rights, but she also helped women who were still in their early stages of self-discovery. Zami: A New Spelling of My Name is a book that has gained the recognition it deserves. It’s a book that takes the audience on a journey of discovery of self, friends, and new words. Lorde did a phenomenal job bringing these words to life as they spoke to their readers. These were the words of a young woman who was on a difficult path that led to new opportunities. These opportunities allowed Lorde to break free and anchor her presence in the world. And Zami: a new spelling of my name is textual proof of its presence..
