It was the 1968 album Waiting for the Sun that marked the emergence of a new aspect of Morrison's image, the Lizard King. A poem titled "The Lizard Celebration", in which he utters "I am the Lizard King", was printed on the album cover. Morrison later claimed that this poem was intended to be partly a joke, but it took on a life of its own and would play an important role in Morrison's mythology. In a 1970 interview, Morrison responded to a question about being called the Lizard King: Stevenson: What did you think of some of the magazine articles that seemed to be calling you the Lizard King and things like that? Morrison: Oh, I liked that. ! I enjoyed it! I thought it was, you know, I've always loved reptiles, I've always had a fondness for them. . . We evolved from reptiles. . . I saw the universe as a gigantic peristaltic serpent and I saw all the people, objects and landscapes as images on the facets of their skin, their scales. I think peristaltic movement is the basic movement of life: swallowing, digestion, the rhythms of sexual intercourse. Even your basic single-cell structures look the same. . .Stevenson: Fluidity and movement?Morrison: Yeah!14Morrison used the Lizard King attribution to develop his image, as seen in this interview, by modeling it on his ideals of closeness to the earth, suggesting that the movement of 'a reptile imitates the fundamental movement of all life. He further used the image of Lizard King in the theatricality of his stage performances and, whether consciously or unconsciously, to contribute to his own image, as well as that of the group.
