It's hard to listen to the news or surf the Internet without hearing about global warming. This is currently a very controversial topic in America. Many politicians use the idea of global warming to alarm their target audience and win their votes. Billions of dollars are spent each year to reduce America's carbon footprint, from cleaner technologies to alternative fuel sources. All of this is being done without concrete evidence that global warming is actually happening. If this actually happens, there is no convincing evidence to verify that it is directly caused by the human population. The theme of global warming goes well beyond protecting our planet. It becomes a political game. Our legislators support spending these large sums of money on a cause that has not been verified; while the funds could be used for other issues facing our country, like health care or the rapidly growing national debt. It's a problem that continues to get worse. Our country is becoming more and more comfortable with the idea of big spending, and the issue is starting to be swept under the rug. This is an important question. Our tax dollars are being wasted and this issue is contributing to the election of officials for a fictitious cause. If this is not stopped, America will continue to spend billions of dollars a year on something that will not change and political leaders will continue to be elected for the wrong reasons. There are many examples of how our government supports uncertain claims about climate change. In 1997, climate scientists were asked whether they supported the theory of global warming.
