  • Essay / Affirmative Action: Bias in the College Admissions Process...

Last summer, the Supreme Court ruled against the use of race in the college admissions process university in Fisher v. University of Texas. Since then, affirmative action has become a major topic in the media; However, many people still don't know what affirmative action is. Affirmative action is a policy aimed at preventing discrimination based on “color, religion, sex, or national origin.” Overall, this favors minorities who are often discriminated against. This may seem like an excellent policy; however, the use of this policy in the college admissions process constitutes bias. In the college admissions process, affirmative action lowers standards for some races, while raising standards for other races. For example, an Asian may need an SAT score of 2,300 to be considered for admission to a top school such as Yale and a white applicant may need a score of 2,100, while An African American or Hispanic only needs a score of 1700. Although affirmative if this action ensures equality in the workplace, it has no place in the admissions process at the university and should therefore be abolished and replaced. This type of policy can be repealed altogether, replaced with a college admissions process that favors first-generation applicants, or replaced with a policy based on the applicant's socioeconomic status. Many people are pressuring colleges to change their admissions policies and abolish affirmative action. As a result, many colleges are abolishing their affirmative action policies. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), states including California, Florida, Michigan, and New Hampshire have passed laws prohibiting the use of affirmative action at public colleges or universities. In Michigan, the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals decides ...... middle of paper ......, or is replaced by a policy based on socioeconomic status. There are total downsides to abolishing affirmative action because it does not increase diversity on campus. An admissions policy favoring first-generation students helps increase diversity on campus. However, the goal of affirmative action should not be to increase diversity on campus; it should be about giving disadvantaged students the opportunity to have a better life. This is what a policy based on socio-economic status does. Affirmative action must cease and be replaced by one of these alternatives. This country was founded on the ideals of equality for all races, and affirmative action goes against all of those ideals. Martin Luther King once said, “All men are created equal.” The color of a person's skin should not be a determining factor for admission to a particular college or university..
