So Far From God by Ana CastilloThis novel is the story of a Chicano family. Sofi, her husband Domingo and their four daughters – Esperanza, Fe, Caridad and Loca live in the small town of Tome, New Mexico. The story focuses on Sofi's struggles, the death of her daughters, and the problems of their town. Sofi endures all the difficulties and problems that come her way. His marriage deteriorates; his daughters die one by one. But she endures it all and emerges stronger and more enlightened than ever. Sofi is a woman who never gives up, even if life treats her badly. The author, Ana Castillo, mixes religion, supernatural events, sex, laughter, and heartbreak in this novel. The novel is tragic, without a happy ending but at the same time funny and inspiring. It is full of victory of the human spirit. The names of Sofi's first three daughters designate the three great Christian ideals (Hope, Faith and Charity). Esperanza, the most liberated of the sisters, dedicated her life to improving the lives of others. She became a journalist and later died while covering the Gulf crisis. She returned home to her family as a spirit. At first, she spoke through La Llorona, a messenger who informed La Loca that her sister had died. Everyone in her family saw her. She appeared to her mother as a little girl who had a nightmare and approached her mother for comfort. Caridad had conversations with her about politics and La Loca spoke to her by the river behind their house..
