Essay / The American Dream in I Hear America Singing
What is the American Dream? Well first…the American dream is something that people from all over the world come to America for. People from other countries come to the United States for a better education and a chance to have the best life possible. The texts I chose to reference are Walt Whitman's "The American Dream Project", "I Hear America Singing" and "NPR More Americans Putting The American Dream on Hold'". The American Dream Project is an organizational group that travels around the country showing businesses that were once successful and are no longer successful or vice versa. Now in the poem “I Hear America Singing” the text is more about the pride and joy of the American dream. The text makes it seem like everyone was happy and there was nothing wrong. The NPR podcast "More Americans Putting the American Dream on Hold" talks about the struggles Americans face today in providing for their families and how so many people thought the American dream was all about buying a house. The American dream is not achievable because it is not available to everyone and it doesn't matter how hard people work because at any moment or hour it can be taken away from you. In the poem, Whitman says that all over America there are workers who sing and go about their work happily and stress-free because they believe they are living the American dream. “Everyone sings what belongs to him and her and no one else.” -Line 8 The text “I Hear America Singing” supports my claim because it demonstrates the type of people who were able to have the chance to live the American dream. This quote makes it seem like they only believe that some people are capable of achieving the American dream. Black African Americans and other minorities were often excluded from many things. The American dream was harder for them to achieve because they were not as wealthy and/or educated as white Americans. African Americans' lack of education allowed them to not be as successful as whites. People often figuratively committed suicide while trying to make a better life for themselves in America. These people were very often disappointed that the American dream was not what it seemed. NPR is spreading the word about this idea and proving that the American dream isn't achievable for everyone. “Millions of people bought a home for the first time and many of them were African Americans and immigrants who finally felt like their dreams were coming true. They were getting a piece of the American dream by buying a house. But over the last five or six years it has really turned into a nightmare. » –NPR. People will go and do Jurassic things and believe that this is the American dream which has only put them in camps.
