Essay / Critical Analysis of China Marine by EB Sledge
The book China Marine by EB Sledge was a biography about EB Sledge's life as a Marine during his guard duty in northern China. During the Pacific War, Sledge grew tired of waiting for his college degree and commission as an officer. He decided to leave Georgia Tech and enlisted in the Navy to join the war. In 1944, he survived the Peleliu and Okinawa War. These were deadly battles and he was on the front lines as an infantryman serving in a rifle company of the First Marine Division. After the forts fought against Japanese soldiers, on August 14, 1945, the Japanese surrendered unconditionally and World War II was over. Sledge and his fellow Marines felt blessed after hearing this announcement. They thought they would return home once the war was over. However, they received a new order that they should go to northern China to protect the region from Chinese communists. In this book, Sledge wanted to tell the effect of America in the civil war in China and the story of Sledge's life while he was in northern China. After seven years of war with Japan, China is experiencing an eruption of its long-simmering civil war. The Chinese Civil War was the war between Chinese Nationalists and Chinese Communists. “Chiang Kai-shek was the leader of Nationalist China and Mao Tse-tsung was the leader of revolutionary communism” (Sledge xix). American soldier involved in this war to support the Chinese nationalists and defeat the Chinese communists. The Americans wanted to protect North China from the Communist Party. Additionally, the Americans also wanted to secure the region against the Japanese. In fact, civilians welcomed the Americans who came to their country and felt like the American soldiers were the heroes. This is because the Americans managed to defeat Japan, then middle of paper. Sledge happy to know the family of Soong Taifoo and his father Marcel. For Sledge, the Soong family were the finest and most refined people he had ever known, who conveyed to him a mixed feeling of friendship and family affection. EB Sledge's story as a US Marine during his service in northern China is proof that Americans had a great effect on the civil war in China. The Americans lost many soldiers while supporting the Chinese Nationalists to control all of Northern China. Eventually, the Chinese Communists managed to capture Peiping and the Chinese Communists lost the war. The life of American Marines at that time was very harsh and they sacrificed their lives for the freedom of another country. To summarize, the story of EB Sledge is proof of how harsh life was for American Marines while serving in the war. Works cited by Sledge, EB China Marine. Tuscaloosa: University of Alabama, 2002.
