Essay / Characteristics of Servant Leadership: Application for...
The characteristics presented in the book revolve around the ideas of Christianity and therefore are not new ideas, but ideas that have been reinvented for today's world. The basis of the book's ideas comes primarily from chapter 13 of I Corinthian, which is often cited as the "love" chapter. This chapter talks about the importance of love in the Christian faith. However, Hunter (1998) brings out the different types of love from the Greek words used in the Bible. The most important type according to the “teacher” in the book is agape love. This love is the most important because it is the kind of love we are supposed to show to every person, no matter who they are or what their station in life is (Hunter, 1998). This author firmly believes that agape love guides and is one of the foundations of servant leadership. Without this love for each person, we cannot truly meet their needs and help them become the best possible version of themselves. The struggle of course is to treat everyone you meet with agape love because it is not always easy to love everyone you meet. It is important, however, that we as nurses act in agape love to ensure that our patients receive the best care possible on the path to optimal treatment.
