Essay / The Life and Career of George Bernard Shaw - 803
The Life and Career of George Bernard ShawGeorge Bernard Shaw was an iconoclastic writer and speaker who touched on many topics that his peers had not yet dared to tackle. He is considered the best and most important playwright since William Shakespeare. His life and career were primarily focused on social reform. Bernard was born on July 26, 1856 in Dublin, Ireland. His parents were mother Lucinda Elizabeth Garly and father George Carr Shaw. Both his father and grandfather were alcoholics. His mother was from Carlow. She was musically gifted and taught singing and music lessons (Kunitz 1268). Bernard was the third and youngest brother in his family. He had two older sisters (Weintraub 655). The alcoholism of Bernard's father and grandfather caused Bernard to hate both alcohol and tobacco. His abstinence from drugs also led him to be a vegetarian, to advocate for animal rights, and to oppose medical vaccinations (Kunitz 1268). During Bernard's adolescence, his uncle gave him private lessons. He attended many different schools from time to time, but his true education is said to come from his mother's love of music, art, and theater (Kunitz 1268). When he was in his early teens, Bernard's mother left his father. She moved to London to pursue a musical career, although her only activity was teaching music. She took Bernard's sisters with her, and Bernard followed her a few years later (Kunitz 1268). In London, he, his mother, and his sisters were poverty-stricken for the next ten years, until he began earning money as a drama critic for a London Journal (Kunitz 1268). At the age of fifteen, while still living in Ireland, Bernard joined a real estate company as an apprentice (Kunitz 1268).
