Essay / Exploring the Roots of Psychodynamic Theory - 770
Talking about problems and feelings is encouraged and helps people manage their problems, by identifying where attitudes and feelings come from. Unfortunately, psychoanalysis can bring out false memories, causing a person to believe that they suffered abuse in their youth, when nothing of the sort took place. Lawrence Kohlberg disagreed with Freud's idea that conscience and morality begin suddenly at age 5 or 6. Kohlberg suggests that the development of morality is a gradual process that begins in childhood and continues to develop into adulthood. Psychodynamic theory cannot be tested scientifically and relies on case studies to obtain its results. All this was interpreted subjectively by the analyst. Freud's work has been criticized as being biased towards one gender and the emphasis of his theories that men are superior because they have a penis and women do not is biased towards men. Psychodynamic theory has its critics, it cannot be denied that it is certainly useful in some cases, examples of where psychoanalysis is useful are people who have been abused, people with eating disorders and those who need family therapy. Unfortunately, all these phenomena are too widespread in today's society. References
