  • Essay / Teacher stress: impact on performance and retention

Buchanan et al. (2013) surveyed teachers in their first, second, and fourth years of teaching. In addition to commonly known factors such as excessive workloads and student behavior, early career teachers also reported feeling physically and emotionally isolated. The strength of this study is that it studied teachers at different points in their careers during the early years. Although this was a good way to identify changing trends in stressors during the early years, the long-term nature of the study made it difficult to retain study participants. By the final year of the study, only 14 participants remained, with the rest of them withdrawing from the study.
