There are various beliefs about the effects of gambling on the gambler. This article aims to compare a scientific scientific article, “Pathological use of video games among young people: a two-year longitudinal study” with a popular media adaptation of the same experiment, “Risks and consequences of video game addiction identified in a new study. The study “Pathological Video Game Use Among Youths: A Two-Year Longitudinal Study” investigates the risks and consequences associated with video game addiction and aims to define when a gamer should be considered a pathological gamer and the effects of video game addiction. The research question is: Is pathological gambling a primary or secondary problem and what are the outcomes for individuals who initiate or stop pathological gambling? Researchers measured the prevalence and duration of problem gambling or Internet use to identify risk and protective factors. (Gentile et al., 2011, p. 319) The media article titled “Risks and Consequences of Video Game Addiction Identified in New Study” took a negative approach to the research question at hand. The article discussed video game addiction as a serious problem. He did not consider any other opinions regarding gambling addiction. He focused on pathological gambling as a reality and did not address the research question as it is. The popular media article included statistics from other studies of video game addiction in other countries. These were used to support the negative stance taken by the media article on the issue. The article treated their position as factual and only chose quotes to support their opinion. The media article gave the public what they wanted to hear, not both sides of the issue. ...... middle of article ...... the research article does not provide enough information to clearly define pathological gambling. The study also revealed no precautions that could be taken to help video game addicts. The results require further replication to increase the accuracy of the results. (Gentile et al., 2011, p.324-326) The experimenters must repeat the experiment with a new set of subjects.
