In School Leadership That Works, Marzano, Waters, and McNulty discuss the findings of 69 studies on the effects of school leadership on student achievement. Additionally, they share the results of a survey of more than 650 building managers. Based on these findings, they developed a list of 21 leadership responsibilities, as well as a five-point plan that will affect student success. Finally, they present a sequence of first-order and second-order change to facilitate student success. Marzano, a well-established education researcher and president of the consulting firm Marzano Associates, teamed up with Timothy Waters and Brian McNutly to write this book. which combines research with action measures. Waters brings with him more than 23 years of experience as an educator and seven of those years as superintendent. He is currently CEO of Mid-continent Research for Education and learning (McREL). Brian McNulty also brings many years of experience in education, ranging from deputy superintendent to deputy commissioner of education. McNulty is vice president of field services at McREL. All three are the authors of numerous books in the field of education. The authors take a strong stance against current research rhetoric regarding the correlation between student performance and leadership. These groups suggest that research has not proven that school leadership is important for student success (p. 6) and that the research presented does not offer advice on how to be an effective leader (p. 12). Marzano and his team disagree. They reviewed and analyzed 35 years of research that challenges the aforementioned belief. In fact, it led them to believe that a strong school leader actually has "substantial impact...... middle of paper...... book." Since the authors work for an education research group, it is understandable that the book contains a lot of data. For an educator and reader who loves numbers and statistics, this book will be enjoyable. However, the average reader might be overwhelmed by this format and not take advantage of the information provided due to the high data density. Overall, it seems unclear whether the book is a reference on how to become a strong school leader or a resource for/evaluating research findings on strong leadership and its effects on student achievement.
