Essay / Breastfeeding Persuasive Essay - 1329
Breastfeeding is when the mother feeds her child with milk from her breast. Breastfed babies normally eat between 8 and 12 times in a 24-hour period (Lindsay 150). According to Stuhldreher, “Before the 18th century, breast milk was the only source of nourishment for infants. If a mother did not breastfeed, a woman called a nurse fed her baby” (Stuhldreher, Par. 19). Starting in the 19th century, a new mother was able to decide whether to breastfeed her baby or give him formula. If a mother is able to breastfeed, she should do so for the sake of her child and herself. Many studies show that breastfeeding is beneficial in many ways for both mother and child (Stuebe 156). Breastfeeding is an essential step in ensuring good health for the mother and her child. Many organizations such as the American Academy of Family Physicians recommend breastfeeding for at least the first six months of the baby's life (Stuebe 155). The World Health Organization, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Healthy People 2010 also encourage breastfeeding for at least the first six months of the baby's life (Belfield 251). The American Academy of Pediatrics believes that babies should be breastfed for at least the first year of life, and then as much as possible after the first year (Steinkraus, para. 5). As Deoni, an assistant professor at Brown University, said: “I think I would say that, combined with all the other evidence, it seems that breastfeeding is absolutely beneficial” (Stacy, Par.13). According to a study using brain images obtained from MRI machines, a baby fed only by breast had better brain development than a baby who was breastfed and formula fed. Breastfeeding and formula combined is better than... middle of paper ...... mothers who are capable should at least try it for the well-being of the baby. Breastfeeding benefits the mother and child in several ways, including weight loss for the mother and providing adequate nutrients to the child. The mother can also reduce the risk of developing cancer and diabetes. The child may develop a better immune system and will do better in school. This creates a loving and supportive bond between mother and child. The immune system, brain function, socialization, and overall long-term health are stabilized throughout the breastfeeding period (Godfrey 1307). Many organizations encourage breastfeeding for at least the first six months of the baby's life and many studies show the increased brain development and skills that breastfed babies develop that formula-fed babies lack. All mothers should breastfeed if they are able.
