Essay / GHG best practices in the construction industry...
The construction industry is one of the largest industries in Canada. Low interest rates in Canada fueled the demand for housing, causing the Canadian construction industry to grow at a CAGR of 2% between 2008 and 2012 (Companies and Markets, 2013). The fact is that building construction has a huge impact on the environment. It is a major consumer of raw materials, land and energy, and it also generates a mass of greenhouse gases and other pollution (USA EPA, 2008). According to data from Statistics Canada (2012), the construction sector produced 2.1% of total GHG emissions from the Canadian industrial sector in 2008. The goal of this project is to convince construction companies in the Waterloo region to adapt the best achievable practices for reducing GHG emissions. during the construction process. Therefore, guidance for calculating GHG emissions and best practices must be determined first. Before promoting these best practices to Waterloo construction companies, appropriate guidance on calculating GHG emissions must first be provided to help them calculate their GHG emissions and identify their issues. . Given this issue, certain protocols can be used, including inventory, tool sets, and guidance for calculating GHG emissions (Matthews, Hendrickson, & Weber, 2008). Best practices are defined as methods or techniques that are consistently verified to be superior to other means, and can sometimes be used for benchmarking purposes (Business Dictionary, 2012). Proposed best practices for construction industries must be cost-effective, feasible and relevant to the construction life cycle. As many literatures indicate, the construction life cycle should be divided into the manufacturing and transportation of building materials...... middle of article ...... a literature review indicated that there is a research gap in the application of best practices to construction companies in Waterloo Region. The M5 Group will work with MMM Consulting Company from January to April 2014 to explore how to fill this gap. The expected research would be based on the views of Waterloo Region construction companies on implementing best practices to improve environmental performance. In determining which companies are interested in improving their environmental performance, further research would be conducted to determine whether these best practices are feasible and achievable by providing appropriate emissions calculation and best practice guidance. The goal of this research is to promote these feasible and cost-effective best practices to construction companies in the Waterloo region to help them achieve their GHG emissions reduction goal...
