  • Essay / The importance of digital technology in child development

It is common to see people standing at bus stops or just walking around with a cell phone in their hand. As Rushkoff (2013) believes, “this tendency to be ‘always on’ changes our ability to interact with the world around us. Consistent with this, Yerkes Dodson's law (Yerkes and Dodson, 1908) believes that a lack of stimulation causes children to become bored, while too much stimulation can cause anxiety. Both are dysfunctional in terms of learning. This is linked to behavior and level of engagement when using technology. Flow is characterized by complete absorption or engagement in an activity and refers to optimal experience (Csikszentmihayli, 2002). It is described as a state of consciousness that individuals can sometimes experience, with children being deeply engaged in an enjoyable activity until everything else going on around them is eliminated. Research suggests that being in this flow or zone makes our lives more fluid.
