When it comes to the modern relationship that Islam shares with Christianity and Judaism, it is not difficult to recognize mutual hostility. Islamic extremism has gradually dominated Western perceptions of Muslims – amid this, the World Trade Center attacks could only exacerbate the situation. It is therefore not surprising that these hostile attitudes were clearly revealed during the controversy over the "Cordoba House" mosque, during which, in 2010, it was proposed that a mosque named "Cordoba House" be established near Ground Zero. Sure enough, the proposal was met with overwhelming opposition and reprimand (Barbaro). Most of the country opposed the mosque, while many of those with a more personal experience of the 9/11 attacks felt deeply offended and unsettled. What's more, the event sparked signs, protests, and contempt from local civilians (Goodstein). Among the mosque's main opponents was former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. Speaking against the proposal, he says the push for the Cordoba House mosque "is a test of the timidity, passivity and historical ignorance of America's elites" (Gingrich). Gingrich goes on to say that calling the mosque the "House of Cordoba" is a deliberate insult as "it refers to Cordoba, Spain – the capital of the Muslim conquerors who symbolized their victory over the Christian Spaniards by transforming a church there -low third in the world. “the largest mosque complex” and “all Islamists in the world recognize Córdoba as a symbol of Islamic conquest.
