    An 84-year-old man with a history of high blood pressure and heart disease presents with sudden onset of paralysis and numbness on the left side of his face, arm and his left leg. He has difficulty walking and his speech is slurred. Upon examination, the left side of his mouth is found to be drooping and when he raises both arms above his head, his left side falls to the side. With the symptoms described, the likely diagnosis is stroke. Symptoms associated with a stroke include: numbness, tingling, or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; confusion, difficulty speaking or understanding speech; difficulty swallowing, difficulty seeing in one or both eyes; difficulty walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; and a severe headache with no known cause. (National Stroke Association, 2014) There is an acronym FAST that is recommended for remembering the signs of a stroke.
