Essay / GMO Foods - 2179
GMO FoodsMany controversies have arisen with the advent of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), particularly around the production, sale and consumption of genetically modified foods. Many people are concerned, even convinced, that consuming genetically modified foods by humans may pose serious health risks. The concern centers on the idea that consuming GMO foods could potentially have various unintended consequences. In addressing the potential side effects and byproducts of creating transgenic foods, such as potential toxicity and allergenicity, it was found that the possibility and likelihood of these side effects are regularly evaluated and precautions are taken to detect and avoid them. Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) has also been considered and, although it is indeed possible that genetically modified (GM) gene transfer into the DNA of mammalian cells could occur, it would not have no lingering or negative effects on the recipient. HGT in microorganisms could be of concern if antibiotic resistance was passed to the recipient, but in light of this fact, resistance to key antibiotics is not used in the creation of GMOs. Therefore, the overall potential for genetically modified foods to have negative effects on human health due to the aforementioned phenomena is negligible.IntroductionThe commercial production and consumption of genetically modified foods (GMOs) is perceived by many as a new technology which has been poorly evaluated and could potentially be harmful to humans. Although these foods seem very new, the first regulatory approval of genetically modified crops occurred in 1995 (A. Konig et al., 2004). It was in the mid-1980s that the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy worked to assess the safety and need to regulate genetically modified crops and any other foods produced from them. genetically modified crops. This takes us back at least twenty years in our ongoing review of the safety of genetically modified foods...
