    Qualitative Article ReviewCritical thinking and clinical judgment are important skills that professional nurses use in an everyday clinical setting. In 2012, a qualitative mixed methods study led by Dr. Jeanne Mann was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational strategy to develop clinical judgment skills in nursing students. In this study, the population was identified as volunteer Tier II baccalaureate nursing students from a Midwestern nursing program. The variables identified in this article are the relationship between critical thinking and clinical judgment. The title of the article clearly stated the focus of the study and sparked interest in reading the research because nurses use critical thinking skills and clinical judgment in all aspects of their practice. ProblemCritical thinking and clinical judgment are vital skills for professional nurses. . According to Mann (2012), research has indicated that nearly one-third of new graduate nurses have critical thinking skills adequate for entry-level practice. The problem identified in this article was that research indicated that the majority of graduating nurses were not able to meet entry level expectations of clinical judgment (Mann, 2012). Objective The objective of this article was clear and concise. The purpose of this mixed-methods qualitative study was “to evaluate the effectiveness of plenary sessions as an educational strategy for developing critical thinking and clinical judgment skills in baccalaureate nursing students” (Mann, 2012, p.27). Conclusion It is important for nursing professionals to apply critical thinking and clinical judgment skills in their daily practice. These skills are essential to nursing practice and research has shown that many graduate nurses are not able to meet entry level expectations for clinical decision making.
