Essay / Is there real love? - 746
In The Great Gatsby, the characters demonstrate that love has no relevant meaning in a relationship without the security that wealth provides. Gatsby and Wilson introduce Daisy and Myrtle with great love; however, they are both stunned when Tom's wealth and security wins the hearts of both ladies. A similar situation occurred with author Francis Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda. She broke off their engagement due to Fitzgerald's menial job. After publishing his books, Fitzgerald gained much wealth and fame, and was then allowed to marry Zelda. Wealth is the key to a happy life with love, however, love alone cannot bring happiness in marriage. Although she loved Gatsby, Daisy ended their relationship because Gatsby cannot give her luxurious gifts, like the pearls Tom bought her. After five years, Gatsby and Daisy met and he changed his life to please her. Gatsby used Daisy as motivation to become the man he is today, a successful man. You can see him in his house. “He reevaluated everything in his house based on the measure of response it elicited from his beloved eyes” (Fitzgerald 91). In Gatsby's early years, he dedicated himself to improving his life. Gatsby wanted to be in the upper class because more opportunities presented themselves to him. The luxury that wealth provides satisfies Gatsby's need to become a rich man. However, everything changes when he meets Daisy and falls in love. After returning from the war, he realizes that Daisy is married to Tom. Since then, Gatsby has not let go of the past and wants to change what could have happened with Daisy. Daisy soon takes control of their relationship. In the quote, Gatsby waits for an approving look from Dai... middle of paper ...can't keep him because they are unable to provide all the essential things a woman needs in life, money, security, and masculinity; however, only one man can provide it, Tom. According to Fitzgerald, the only way to win a girl's love and keep it is through money. Fitzgerald shows the reader that together, love and money are the key to achieving a satisfying relationship. The idea that people choose to be in relationships for the money is sickening. Those who choose this lifestyle care about their popularity and use wealth and fame to be liked. People who throw rich parties in Hollywood care because these parties are the key to their success and prosperity. Myrtle and Daisy choose this lifestyle because they know that their lives will benefit if the people they marry have a lot of money. Love will stay with us forever, but money always has an expiration date.
