The speech was written because of her power and influence on the movement and the language and strategies she used played a huge role in it. Sojourner used her experiences as a slave woman and mother to connect with her audience. Black men in the audience could relate to her struggles as a slave and to white women as a mother. Sojourner had shown his audience that a person can experience multiple systems of oppression and that their presence should not be erased. Sojourner also repeatedly asked “and I’m not a woman?” » after each refutation of sexist and racist stereotypes about women, which were undoubtedly aimed at the white women in the audience. The women's rights movement focused solely on white women's experiences under male domination. By highlighting her experiences as a black woman and then asking the question “and I’m not a woman?” » Sojourner calls out white feminists for their flaws. The movement would not defend women's rights if it only defended the rights of white people.
