  • Essay / Edvard Munch: Perception of anxiety - 2798

IntroductionHow did Edvard Munch perceive anxiety? Edvard Munch, a world-renowned Norwegian painter, was able to express his suppressed feelings of fear and anxiety on canvas with an ability that both amazed and frightened the people of the world. He used his anxiety about life, love, and death to inspire people and make them see the problems in his life. Edvard Munch is particularly known for his works “The Scream” and “Madonna”. Munch's popularity is due to his extraordinary ability to convey deep, raw emotion from the unconscious onto canvas, leaving it up to the viewer to interpret, feel and think. He stood out from other artists of his time because he moved away from norms and focused on the feelings and state of the work rather than details and perfection. Anxiety became the main focus of Munch's art. This essay traces Edvard Munch's childhood focusing on the events that caused him anxiety, how anxiety affected his relationship with women and love, and how his idea of anxiety was supported by the theories of Søren Kierkegaard. These elements serve as support for an analysis of three of his works “Evening on Karl Johan”, “Mélancolie” and “La femme en trois temps”. This essay should be considered a work in the visual arts because it analyzes three works by Munch that focus on anxiety. The analysis will contain an analysis of the form, content and context of each of the works. After discovering the Edvard Munch: Angst/Anxiety exhibition at the AROS Art Museum in Aarhus, Denmark, I found and developed the curiosity and inspiration for this essay. I find this worthy of study because Munch changed the view and concept of art, and provided the public with a concept of art that was not the norm in the 19th century......mid paper...... Youtube.
