Essay / History of the 1930s - 1097
The 1930s was an important decade in American history because it was tragic and made history; there was a lot of suffering and conflict with the economy. People lost hope because their lives were ruined and never thought about how they could rise as a nation. As the years pass, the United States begins to recover and brilliant ideas arise and great leaders such as Franklin Delano Roosevelt lead us on a better path. Although the 1930s were difficult and desperate at times, the United States went through phases of economic, social, cultural, political, and legislative progress. Economic Impacts One of America's conflicts was over human concerns and money. Since the stock market shock, getting back on track has been difficult. At the highest level of unemployment, 25 percent, or 13 million people, were out of work. Businesses were collapsing, as "in Detroit, for example, automobile production fell by two-thirds, and the number of workers in the city's huge auto industry fell by more than half" (Lewis). This disaster limited the ability of citizens to advance in technology due to the massive loss of money. Bank failures increased every year from 1920 to 1931 to 2,294. This caused people to no longer trust banks and place their savings in them. Because Roosevelt was concerned about our economy, he created a program, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), to allow banks to operate better. The banking system was much more organized. Today our money is safe and is covered by the FDIC. “The agency also identifies and monitors risks to its deposit insurance funds and attempts to limit the effects on the U.S. economy if a bank or thrift institution were to fail” (Wallechin...... middle of paper ......i ). The FBI is a valuable source of crime and helps make society much more civilized. The 1930s may have been marked in history as America's tragic era; a lot was learned and adapted from that time. Everything that surrounds us, the way we dress or even our tradition comes from somewhere. Learning from the past and bringing ideas from that time benefits Americans and helps us make the right decisions. If we look around us, the United States has accomplished a lot. All thanks to the hard work of our Americans. The United States has become a much better place and the new things that have emerged during this time give us a sense of what life was like in the 1930s. The United States has progressed as a nation and looking back gives us a connection and pride as to how the United States survived difficulties. This is how America's toughest time brought out the best in America, even though it was the hardest time to go through..
