A Midsummer Night's Dream is famous for its powerful comic romance. Many find the ridiculous love story both charming and hilarious. One of the major themes of A Midsummer Night's Dream is the occurrence of bizarre events caused by love. Shakespeare uses Helena and Lysander to convey the recurring idea of the madness of love. These two characters make irrational decisions to get closer to their love. Ironically, the ridiculousness of each choice makes the play more relatable to the audience, because love makes everyone a little crazy. Helena, the scorned lover, is a perfect example of the madness caused by love. She is in love with Demetrius, but her love is not returned. Demetrius despises Helena, calling her ugly so often that she believes him. Helena is also aware of Demetrius' past romances and his tendency to be unfaithful. She knows he is a bad person but still loves him. Helena, continuing her quest for Demetrius's love, betrays her best friend, Hermia.
